Rebekah's prayer                                                                                        February 19, 2010

Genesis 25: 22-23

The children struggled together within her and she said, "If it is to be this way, why do I live?"  So she went to inquire of the Lord.  And the Lord said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided: the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger."

Who hasn't tried to understand why some things happen?  Usually it's some disaster or tragedy.  Here Rebekah asks the Lord and he explains that her twin sons are fighting even before they are born!  My siblings and I had our share of fights when we were younger.  Now we are very close and help and support each other.  It seems that back in the biblical times, people could actually talk to God like Rebekah.  We can pray to God and hope for an answer or some sign.  If we really listen, our heart tells us what is right and wrong.  That little voice inside (some call it our conscious) is God speaking to us.  We just have to be quiet and listen.

Dear God,

We don't always understand the things that happen.  Let us trust you to take care of us and give us the strength to do what is right.  Let our community be more understanding and compassionate.  Amen
